December 11, 2018 – Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC) has recently taken proactive steps to address inmate self-harm and suicide in a positive way by making it part of their policy to have foldable, paperboard utensils in all Ohio correctional facilities.

According to Sharon Salyers, of Southern Ohio Correctional, “I used the ESU when I worked at Ross Correctional Institute and I am happy to see it being adapted as part of the Ohio policy for all ODRC facilities.” EcoSecurity Utensil(ESU) is the sole manufacturer of the patented, foldable, paperboard utensil for corrections. ESU prevents self harm with eating utensils for the at-risk populations. The ESU also helps reduce demoralization and agitation that exacerbates self-destructive behavior, which can be caused by fingers-only menus in psychiatric, segregated and suicide watch units.EcoSecurity Utensil (ESU) is the only manufacturer of a sturdy, foldable, paperboard utensil for corrections. ESU prevents at-risk populations from self-harm by using eating utensils. The ESU can also helps reduce demoralization and agitation that exacerbates self-destructive behavior, which can be caused by fingers-only menus in psychiatric, segregated and suicide watch units.

“Eating meals with fingers can have a degrading effect and can lead to low morale, unrest and combative behavior.” says Dr. Nathan Cohen, Psychiatrist – CDCR California Medical Facility, “EcoSecurity Utensil offers a real solution to serving patients who can not have standard utensils.”

The Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles has also recently  joined the hundreds of correctional and jail facilities that have adopted ESU for their challenging populations. At 1.5 million square feet, Twin Towers is the world’s largest jail as well as largest mental health facility in the US with the highest population of inmates with psychiatric issues, accordingto County Correction Facilities & Jails – Los Angeles County

ESU was specifically developed with correctional physicians to reduce costly and dangerous incidents. They are made from a slick, moisture-resistant, FDA approved paperboard, much like a coffee cup. A unique structural fold makes a scoop sturdy enough to cut a tamale, but not skin.
